He used to call me ‘Sam’ sometimes.

Of course, back then he called me ‘Captain’, too.

But ‘Sam’ became ‘Carter’ and ‘Captain’ became ‘Major’, then ‘Colonel’.

Things change, I suppose.

After all, every now and again, in another lifetime, I used to call him ‘Jack’.

I answer his ‘Colonel’ with ‘General’ now.

The ranks bestowed upon us are badges of honor, marks of success.

Brigadier General Jack O’Neill and Lieutenant Colonel Samantha Carter are heroes, winners, and above all, officers.

That is the life we lead.

The life we chose.

But sometimes, I wish he still called me ‘Sam’.
