Mere Words

Elizabeth Weir lay in bed, utterly exhausted and unseeing.

But she denied herself the simple pleasure of slumber.

She felt she didn’t deserve such peace, for there was no escaping the words she’d uttered a mere forty-eight hours ago.

Mere words, said in jest, now were a cold, hard reality.

Forever.

A single tear ran down Elizabeth’s temple and moistened the hair just above her ear.

A sniffle escaped.

The last words Carson Beckett ever heard from her continued to torture Elizabeth mercilessly.

Shut up.

Finally, she cried in earnest.

Someday, perhaps, this wouldn’t hurt so much.

But not tonight.

The End
