Instinct

Jonathan O’Neill had made some friends here.

Not many, but some.

He honestly was enjoying himself in general.

But sometimes the youngness of those around him was too much to take.

And sometimes it was downright dangerous.

Robbie had a gun.

Taken from his father’s safe in secret.

He thought it was cool.

So did the other boys.

When Robbie loaded it, the boys argued.

Jon was silent.

But when Robbie pretended to fire the gun without thought, Jon acted on instinct.

Now, Robbie sat in an ambulance, his arm broken.

The other boys were frightened.

And Jon stood alone.
