Flash

I brave a glance across the table.

He’s meticulously studying a spot in front of his folded hands, but he senses my gaze.

Eyes lift, and lock with mine for an eternal millisecond.

For an instant, I see a softness, a tenderness.

Things seem almost as they were.

But then a darkness boils to the surface, and his eyes become cold.

Hard.

A flash of something like anger or betrayal dances through brown.

He tears his eyes from mine, and I know that everything has changed as surely as I know the name of the flash I just saw.

Kanan.

The End
